IDE 712 – Analysis for Human Performance Technology Decisions

Course Summary

The primary purpose of IDE 712 is to investigate the concepts, principles, and practical procedures of human performance technology for the analysis and understanding of performance problems and issues in human and organizations, and the identification of performance-improvement interventions. We will learn how to apply models and how the results are used in decision-making in everyday life situations. The course will investigate analytical techniques that can be used to determine the most appropriate solutions in a variety of educational and business situations. The process is often referred to as Front-End Analysis (FEA).

Joe Harless first used the term Front-End Analysis in 1969 in his publication “An Ounce of Analysis (Is Worth a Pound of Objectives).” This came from his finding that training often did not lead to desired results. Unless we understand the cause of a performance, our ID process may not develop an effective solution; whether it is instruction or some other solution. In this course, you will learn various models for front-end analysis. Each of these involves investigating the nature of performance problems and determining whether causes are environmental, motivational, or a deficit in knowledge or skills.

The primary purpose of this course is to investigate the concepts, principles, and practical procedures of human performance technology for the analysis and understanding of problems and issues of human and organizational performance and for the design and implementation of all manner of performance-improvement interventions. We will learn how to apply models and how the results are used in decision-making in everyday life situations.

 

During the semester, we will explore tools and techniques used to investigate the performance problem. You will be expected to apply readings, class discussions and other materials to the development of an FEA Plan that you will develop for a specific performance problem.
