IDE 632 – Instructional Design – Development II

Course Summary

This course will engage students in the theories and practices of instructional design and development. The course focuses on instructionalsystems design (ISD). We explore ISD as it is practiced in different environments.

Romiszowski characterized ISD as “educational engineering” and those who practice it as “educational engineers” (or instructional engineers)defined as “… a person who uses scientific knowledge to solve practical problems.” The problems that we investigate relate to instructional needs(or gaps between current conditions and desired conditions), change, evaluation, management, and instruction.

During the semester, we will explore each of the components of the ISD process. Additionally, you will be expected  to apply readings, class discussions and other material to the creation of a personal ISD model that you will develop throughout the semester.

The course has been organized around ten task/content/skill areas. Each unit includes an introduction. This introduction includes:

  • A set of objectives;

  • The readings list; and

  • An assessment or exercise for the unit.

Assessment or practice of unit objectives will be conducted through collaborative activities.
